HISTORY
Deelkraal means “shared kraal” and refers to the time when farmers let their cattle graze during the day and gathered them safely at a central enclosure at night.
The farm was founded in 1861 and received its current buildings in the early 1900s. For more than 80 years, it remained in the hands of one farming family before passing through several owners. The current custodians have lovingly restored both the reserve and the historic farmhouse with great care and respect for its heritage.
Today, Deelkraal still radiates its authentic Cape Dutch architecture. The main house and the Garden Cottage together offer eight characterful rooms, each inspired by the animals that live on the estate. From the indigenous gardens, you look out over the plains where wildlife roams freely.
NATURE MANAGEMENT
The reserve has been carefully restored: invasive species were removed, giving the ecosystem room to breathe again. In this way, we bring our ambition to create a sustainable and positive impact in Africa to life.
Today, Deelkraal is a sanctuary for a wide variety of wildlife:
-
Plains animals such as giraffes and zebras
-
Water species such as hippos and crocodiles
-
Nocturnal animals such as brown hyenas and leopards
You will also encounter rare and protected species here, including the Tsessebe and Sable antelope, as well as the reintroduced Southern Roan antelope. A herd of Kruger-lineage buffalo also roams freely across the reserve.
